Congestion

Cornell Road is heavily congested. Eastbound traffic on Cornell is particularly heavy between the Barnes Road and and Murray Boulevard intersections during the afternoon/evening commute hours.

  • Traffic delays are common throughout the Cornell Road area, impacting passenger vehicles, buses, bicycles and pedestrians.
  • At times, traffic backs up almost to US 26, which could create a more serious safety concern.
  • Both the Cornell Road/Barnes Road and Cornell Road/Murray Boulevard intersections have high crash rates, as per Washington County's most recent Safety Priority Index System list.

Over the years, our Traffic Engineers and Signal Technicians have made numerous traffic signal timing adjustments to mitigate congestion and improve safety at both the Cornell/Barnes and Cornell/Murray intersections. However, traffic volumes have increased to the point where additional traffic signal adjustments are no longer effective.
